One of the most important tools for a journey through unfamiliar territory is a good compass. Several years ago I got lost in the woods behind our home. A good compass was what I needed to find my way back to the road.
Our world lacks a good moral compass. Our church group and regular Bible study is the compass we need to stay on the right path and the tool to find our way back to the path that leads us home.
Everyone needs to be involved in regular group Bible study. We have classes on Sunday mornings at 10:00 and Wednesday evenings at 6:30. As disciples we need to be continuing our education in the Lord’s way. I urge you to join us for our scheduled classes. The Lord will provide you with the compass to stay on the right path! God bless, Dave
Identity!
“My name is James O’Kelly. I was born in 1735 in Virginia and was a clergyman of the Methodist church. I didn’t agree with the Methodist Itinerant System – which says the head Bishop held absolute power. In 1792, Head Bishop Francis Ausbury and myself couldn’t agree on a preacher’s right to appeal a Bishop’s decision. So that same year, I decided to withdraw from the Methodist church.
I went on to establish the Republic Methodist Church, later known simply as the Christian Church.
We held 5 basic principles: Jesus Christ is the head of the church, the name ‘Christian’ is the only name we need, the scriptures are completely sufficient for faith and practice, Christian character is the only test of fellowship and finally, everyone must examine the scriptures for themselves.”
Everyone is welcome to the Churches of Christ. We exist to tear down walls, rather than put them up. It is our job to unify believers in Christ. Is it a job we’re doing well? Should we be doing things differently? What makes us different from other groups meeting in the name of Jesus? Join us on Wednesday nights as Jesse Huff leads us through a series of lessons called, “Identity.”
*SERMON THIS WEEK*
Becoming a Christian—Part 4 Do We Need a Church?
This is the 4th lesson in our series of 5 on “Becoming a Christian.” We have determined from the Scriptures the following truths:
· All have sinned and the penalty is spiritual separation (death) from God · Jesus is the Savior and the only One who can “save” us from sin · Salvation is the forgiveness of sin and the hope of eternal life with God
What happens when we are saved? Do we need a church? That is the topic of our 4th lesson. We have been asking questions on each topic and searching the Scriptures for the answers. Here is a list of the questions we will seek answers for this week.
1. What does the Bible mean when referring to “church?”
2. Is the church a building or a group of people?
3. Who made the church?
4. Who is the head of the church?
5. Do I choose a church and how do I join?
6. Do I have to belong to a church to be a Christian?
